Why is MVK at Worlds? The New Format Turns Play-In into a Battle of Life and Death for the Weak
A: Rất thấp do thiếu kinh nghiệm quốc tế và chiều sâu đội hình. Q: Vì sao LPL/LCK bị loại? A: Riot muốn tạo cơ hội cho các khu vực trung bình và mới nổi.
On August 31, Riot announced the new format for the 2026 World Championship Play-In stage. After reading it, I just want to ask one question: Does MVK Esports – a team that just secured their spot after a dramatic lower-bracket run – realize they are stepping into a battle far more brutal than they ever imagined?
Last year, Play-In was essentially a match between the 4th seeds of LPL and LCK. This year, everything is turned upside down. Four teams from LEC, LCS, CBLoL, and LCP will compete in a double-elimination bracket, all Bo5, with only one team advancing. It sounds fair, but to me – someone who has commentated hundreds of matches from football World Cups to the most intense LoL Bo5s – this is a huge gamble.
Context: LPL and LCK – the two strongest regions – are excluded from Play-In. Instead, four teams from mid-tier and emerging regions will compete for a single spot. What does that mean? It means Riot is creating a 'mini-Worlds' for the left-behind. And MVK – a team from LCP – is one of them.
Look at their journey. MVK lost their first playoff match, then beat GAM 3-2 in the lower bracket, and finally lost to CFO 1-3 in the finals. They secured their spot as the third seed of LCP – a newly merged region from PCS, VCS, LJL. This is their first Worlds appearance. I have followed them through their matches, and I see a team with fierce fighting spirit but severely lacking international experience.
The most important thing I noticed from the format analysis: all matches are Bo5. This favors teams with deep champion pools and tactical adaptability. LEC and LCS have a huge advantage here – they have more internationally experienced players and a more diverse tactical library. What about MVK? They are a team of solid role players – Kratos, Gury, Chika, Harky, SiuLoong – with no superstar who can carry the team alone. If Chika or Harky has an off-day, they have almost no chance of turning the game around.
But I don't just want to talk about their weaknesses. I want to talk about a blind spot most people miss: the schedule. The qualifiers run from September 19 to October 10. MVK secured their spot early – which means they have more time to practice on the new Worlds patch. Meanwhile, the CBLoL team will only confirm their spot on October 10 – almost no preparation time. This is an invisible advantage nobody talks about. I have seen teams with long bootcamps in Korea or Europe usually perform much better than those arriving late.
But there is a paradox: the double-elimination format allows a team to lose their first match and still have a chance, but because there is only one advancing spot, the psychological pressure is immense. I have seen many teams collapse under such pressure. MVK has proven they can come back from the lower bracket – they did it in LCP. But that was in their region where they know their opponents well. In Play-In, they will face completely different styles – from LEC's control-based play to LCS's organized chaos.
Now, let me talk about where I could be wrong. I might be overestimating the differences between regions. LEC and LCS have not been as strong in recent years. They often lose to smaller region teams at international events. Maybe MVK – with their freedom and nothing to lose – will create an upset. But I don't believe it. I believe the difference in tactical depth and experience will be the deciding factor. And that's why I think MVK will need a miracle.
From a business perspective, MVK's presence at Worlds is a huge boost for their brand. A first-ever Worlds appearance – even if only at Play-In – is enough to attract new sponsors. I have seen many small teams leverage this opportunity to grow. But if they are eliminated early, that value will quickly fade.
So what will happen? I predict MVK will win one Bo5 in the lower bracket – possibly against CBLoL – but will fall to LEC or LCS. They will go home with an honorable win, but not the ticket to Main Stage. However, I hope I am wrong. I hope they will prove that LCP is not just an emerging region but one that can truly compete.
Because if they do, it will be the greatest story in the history of Vietnamese esports – and I will be the first to write about it.
